Subsurface Utility Engineering (S.U.E.)
Custom Utility Solutions Ltd. (formally Check Mark Utility Locates Inc.) helps designers, utility owners, and contractors avoid costly utility conflicts through the completion of an accurate S.U.E. investigation prior to any major utility design, development, or proposed construction. Through our investigation, we can help to identify any potential unknowns beneath the surface, which will limit any potential disturbances to any existing utility customers.
Custom Utility Solutions Ltd. Offers the Following Levels of Utility Locating Services:
All utility locating and mapping services provided are performed in accordance with ASCE 38-02 (Standard Guideline for the Collection and Depiction of Existing Subsurface Utility Data) guidelines.
Utility information is derived from existing records or oral recollections. Custom Utility Solutions Ltd. will review any existing plans of the utilities requested, including “As-Built” drawings.
Utility information is obtained by surveying and plotting visible above-ground utility features. Through the use of professional judgment, Custom Utility Solutions Ltd. will then correlate the utility objects seen in the field with existing plans and information previously obtained from utility records (as discussed in Utility Quality Level D).
Utility information is obtained through the application of appropriate surface geophysical methods (such as electromagnetic radio-detection equipment) in order to determine the existence and approximate horizontal position of subsurface utilities. Custom Utility Solutions Ltd. will then convert these findings onto plan documents (with tolerances previously defined by the project owner).
The precise horizontal and vertical location of utilities is obtained by the actual exposure and subsequent measurement of subsurface utilities, usually at a specific point. Custom Utility Solutions Ltd. may use minimally intrusive excavation equipment in order to minimize the potential for utility damage. The location, as well as other utility attributes, will then be presented on plan documents. The accuracy of located utilities is typically set to 15 mm vertically, and to applicable horizontal survey and mapping accuracy (as defined or expected by the project owner).
Our Quality Assurance Policy
Custom Utility Solutions Ltd. will complete a full review of the survey, field drawings, and existing utility records to ensure quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC). Our team will then transfer the information to the client’s CAD drawing or project plan (if required). The final drawing will then be reviewed and approved by a Professional Engineer (if required).
Private Property Locating Services
Custom Utility Solutions Ltd. (formally Check Mark Utility Locates Inc.) assists private property owners to locate any privately owned utilities that may be buried on their property. Areas where private lines are common include: apartment complexes, mobile home parks, gated subdivisions, cabin communities, farms, ranches, schools and universities, hospitals, industrial areas, government facilities, military installations, wind farms, and other areas.
Public utility owners only mark the lines they own and maintain. This usually means up to where the utility meter is located. Underground lines that extend beyond the meter, or that are not connected to a meter, are typically not installed or owned by the public underground facility owner and therefore may not be marked. These may include underground utility lines such as: water & sewer laterals, sprinkler irrigation systems, lines connected to a propane tank or septic system, or power to a detached garage, outbuilding, barn, lamp post, etc.
